One of the most inspiring features of the Bhutanese culture is the many symbolic ceremonies that are employed to observe momentous occasions. The traditional Bhutanese wedding ceremony is a spiritual and symbolic event that entails a simple and solemn service unlike wedding customs of other cultures that necessitate an extravagant celebration. The service includes the performances of profound religious rites by Buddhist saints (lama) and monks for the bride, groom, and close members of respective families. The religious rites focus on blessings of faithful and eternal love, health, and happiness from the local deities to the couple.
Bodhidharma offers this special travel selection for couples who are newlywed, or betrothed to experience a traditional wedding ceremony, as an auspicious event to bless the new marriage, and a sensational cultural tour of Bhutan to celebrate the union with absolute enjoyment. The ceremony is also suitable for renewing marriage vows. The wedding ceremony will occur at an ancient and sacred Buddhist temple. The service will begin with a fumigation ceremony outside of the temple where monks recite mantras and light incense as a symbol of sanctification to satisfy the local deities. This is followed by the lighting of butter lamps and the performance of a purification rite to cleanse one’s bodies, speech and minds of all sins. Next, an offering of local wine (Ara) is made to the deities and one another as a symbol of the faith and everlasting bond. Rings are exchanged and a final ritual in honor of the God of longevity is performed by the lama to bless the couple with a long and prosperous marriage. The service will conclude with an offering of food and drink to the deities and presenting one another with a five-colored silk scarf (Dhar Naynga), an exchange to mark the beginning of a long and happy married life. The wedding ceremony can also be customized to traveler’s preferences and can include a romantic dinner, cake-cutting ceremony, cultural musical show and more.
