Experience a spectacularly sensory mountaineering journey into the high altitude villages of Laya and Gasa! The Laya/Gasa trek is Bhutan’s iconic and most scenic long distance trek. On your arrival to Bhutan, we whisk you away into Paro valley for an afternoon of visits to a few historic places in Paro. You will also hike to the iconic Taktsang (Tiger’s nest) on your second day.
You will begin the trek on the third day with a drive to Sharna, where we will set off on a trail along the river before climbing through oak and pine forests to the campsite. You will follow this trail again the day after before entering into Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park and descending into a meadow where your second camp site is situated. The next day, you will begin your trek to Jangothang campsite, the base of Mount Jomolhari, hiking through alpine meadows and passing through little nomadic villages. You will spend the next full day at the Jangothang campsite, acclimatizing and rejuvenating before your crossing of the Nyelela pass on your next day. The passage into Nyelela pass (4,870 m) consists of a steep climb, where you will catch clear sights of Mount Jumolhari, Mount Jichu Drakey and Tsherimgang, before a steady descent to the picturesque Lingshi valley, where you will camp overnight.
The next leg of the journey entails crossing over three major passes, Gobula pass (4,410 m), Jharila (4750 m), and Sinche la (5,000), in the next three days to make a descent into Limithang valley. From Limithang, you will trek towards the quaint village of Laya where you will spend a day relaxing and immersing in the wonderful nomadic lifestyle. After a day of reposing in Laya, you will begin the final leg of the trek to arrive at Gasa village (2,770 m). At Gasa, you will celebrate the completion of the arduous trek by luxuriating in the restorative waters of the Gasa hot springs, Bhutan’s most popular hot springs, and an exploration of Gasa village.
From Gasa, you will drive to Punakha for a day of visits to a few historic monuments, spending the night and then driving to Thimphu the day after. While in Thimphu, you will be guided through two pleasurable days of sightseeing of popular cultural places as well as tourist-favorite markets, museums, local factories, and restaurants.
